Welcome to Saffron Walden Liberal Democrats

After the elections on Thursday June 4th, the Liberal Democrats are now the only opposition group on Conservative-controlled Essex County Council. Lib Dem Andrew Duff MEP was re-elected. In Essex, the Greens failed to win an MEP or a County Councillor.

Here, in the north-west of Essex, Liberal Democrats are the only party seriously challenging the Conservatives. In all recent elections (District, Borough, County, Parliamentary and European) Liberal Democrats finished ahead of Labour.

Inspired by the enthusiastic support of Uttlesford Council's ruling Conservative councillors for a 3000-house eco-town near Elsenham, the Labour government has proposed a 5000-house eco-town for the same site.

Baroness Shirley Williams visits Stansted at sell-out event New! Thu 11th Mar 2010 Shirley Williams told the Supper Club that the country needed a major reform of our parliamentary democracy. The guest of honour at the supper club in Stansted last Friday argued that people were fed up with two party politics. She said people were rightly angry over the parliamentary expenses scandal and last week's revelations about Conservative deputy chairman, Lord Ashcroft's tax avoidance. There needed to be a complete reform of politics and constitutional changes to restore trust in representational democracy.

Conservative Party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft estimated to have saved £127million in tax says Huhne New! Sat 6th Mar 2010 Conservative Party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft is estimated to have saved more than £127m in British tax since he became a member of the House of Lords, according to Liberal Democrat research.

Conservatives reject 1.2% Council tax increase Sat 27th Feb 2010 Uttlesford District Council's ruling Conservative councillors have rejected an amendment from the opposition Liberal Democrat group to reduce council spending and lower the council tax rise from 2.9% to 1.2%.

Liberal Democrats launch plans to revitalise town centres Sat 20th Feb 2010 Liberal Democrats in Saffron Walden Constituency have set out plans to revitalise Britain's town centres, protect the future of the Post Office, and help small businesses thrive in a fairer marketplace. The plans include a change in planning law to curb the expansion of supermarkets.
