Welcome to Saffron Walden Liberal Democrats
After the elections on Thursday June 4th, the Liberal Democrats are now the only opposition group on Conservative-controlled Essex County Council. Lib Dem Andrew Duff MEP was re-elected. In Essex, the Greens failed to win an MEP or a County Councillor.
Here, in the north-west of Essex, Liberal Democrats are the only party seriously challenging the Conservatives. In all recent elections (District, Borough, County, Parliamentary and European) Liberal Democrats finished ahead of Labour.
Inspired by the enthusiastic support of Uttlesford Council's ruling Conservative councillors for a 3000-house eco-town near Elsenham, the Labour government has proposed a 5000-house eco-town for the same site.

CONSERVATIVE WASTE PLANS THROWN OUT BY GOVERNMENT

The waste disposal plans of Conservative-led Essex County Council are in total confusion after their second Private Finance Initiative bid was rejected by the government. The Conservatives' latest bid, which seems to have been cobbled together overnight without any consultation, is very different to the last one - with no incinerator and plans to send all of Essex's unrecycled waste to Basildon. The government are also examining the Conservatives' decision to go ahead with a waste-processing plant at Rivenhall.

Lib Dems Say: Food Waste Caddy Trial Was A Waste Of Money

Uttlesford District Council's Environment Committee has voted against scrapping the brown wheelie bins across the whole district, as the recent caddy trial was not successful. The trial - which has cost taxpayers £23,000 - was conducted because the Conservatives thought that the brown wheelie bins for food waste, introduced by the Liberal Democrats when they ran the Council, were too big.

Obituary - Frances Spalding

Frances Spalding was a lifelong member of the Liberal Democrats - and before that the Liberal Party. She was a stalwart of the party for many years - delivering her first leaflets as a child.
