Liberal Democrat Andrew Yarwood won the Newport By-election on 8th. June.

Following the sad death of the Uttlesford District Council's Vice Chair and Chair of Newport Parish Council Bill Bowker in February, a by election has been called for 8th June.

Newport Parish Councillor, Andrew Yarwood has been chosen to fight the seat and take on the role alongside sitting Liberal Democrat Councillor for Newport, Cllr Peter Wilcock

Andrew Yarwood who has lived in the area all his life, moved into Newport four years ago with his wife and son, and is a Newport Parish Councillor. He works for a large accountancy firm in their financial services regulatory practice for the last 7 years, and before that within the insurance and financial services business. He says on his selection:

"My work has given me many skills that I believe will help me as a District Councillor.

I am a passionate active person who likes to get things done. I joined the Parish Council in Newport just over a year ago, and have been driving the Youth Centre project for most of that time, and am looking forward to the Youth Centre reopening in June. I will work hard to follow the example left by Bill Bowker, although I know it will be a hard act to follow."

Cllr Peter Wilcock, who is currently the Chairman of Uttlesford District Council, said, " I am very pleased to have a colleague of such high calibre standing for the Liberal Democrats in this election. He has shown that he is determined to deliver results in Newport with his involvement with the Youth Centre. I will be looking forward to his election to represent the villages of Newport, Rickling, Quendon, and Widdington.
