Liberal Democrats Have Cut Council Tax for Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden Town Council agreed a budget for 2007 at Wednesday night's Council meeting. It will be good news for Council Tax payers, as the total is reduced by nearly £20,000. Cllr. Richard Freeman said 'although we're asking for less, we are going to increase grants, introduce a mobile speed camera and improve the town hall including replacing the lift, while maintaining all our existing commitments and still keeping £100,000 ring fenced for new playing fields.'

Saffron Walden Town Council is responsible for the Town Hall, the Market, the Common, Golden Acre community centre, the Herberts Farm and Anglo American playing fields, along with other open spaces in the town. Cllr. Barbara Hughes said 'The Town Council adds a great deal of value to our community, at a very low cost. The Council's budget represents only a tiny percentage of the total Council Tax, and under the Liberal Democrats has only increased by an average of 3% a year for the last four years.'
