Vicarage Mead sheltered accommodation in Thaxted has now been completed to the delight of old and new residents who gathered there for lunch with Councillors and staff last Friday.

The accommodation had been allowed to run down for many years by the Conservative administration which ran Uttlesford District Council up to 2003. When the Liberal Democrats took over there was a proposal from the time of the old Tory administration to give the building over to a housing association and the Lib Dems were not happy with that.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Martin Foley for Thaxted commented: "We fought hard to keep ownership under the control of Uttlesford District Council and plans were drawn up to develop Vicarage Mead into what we see today. We now have some of the most up-to-date and comfortable sheltered accommodation in England and it really is fantastic!"

"The residents really like it and I would not be a bit surprised if awards were won by the council with this wonderful development for our seniors."

Cllr Antoinette Wattebot, Lib Dem Councillor for Thaxted, said: "The Liberal Democrats remain committed to giving high standards of service in our local communities and this major investment in Thaxted shows that when we are in power we mean business. I am also pleased that funding for the Thaxted Day Centre agreed during the Lib Dem administration has meant that the building of Thaxted Day Centre should start soon."

The new Leader of Uttlesford Liberal Democrats, Cllr Peter Wilcock, remarked: "When I visited last week, I was so impressed by the transformation that has occurred since my last visit, and the warm welcome received from the residents in this community. It is amazing just how much can be achieved to allow our seniors an excellent quality of life."
